For renewal through mail or a representative, the previous NBI clearance must generally have been issued in 2014 or later. Clearances issued before 2014 are processed as new applications.

NBI renewal requirements for overseas Filipinos?
The usual NBI renewal requirements for eligible OFWs include:
- Latest or original previous NBI clearance
- Recent 2×2 colour photograph with a white background
- Photocopy of a valid Philippine passport
- Active email address
- Signed authorisation letter when using a representative
- Required payment and courier arrangements
These OFW NBI requirements may differ slightly depending on the Philippine embassy or consulate assisting you. You may need to submit a new application when:
- Your previous clearance was issued before 2014
- You no longer have the old clearance
- Your name, birth date or place of birth requires correction
- You are applying for the first time
A new application normally requires NBI Form No. 5. Fingerprints must be properly taken at a Philippine embassy, consulate or an accepted local police or fingerprinting office. The person taking the fingerprints must sign and identify their position on the form.

The NBI states that processing may take up to a certain number of working days after the Mailed Clearance Section receives the complete documents. This period does not include international shipping, return delivery or additional verification.
Applicants should begin the NBI renewal for OFWs well before a visa, employment or immigration deadline. Allow extra time for courier delivery, public holidays and possible document corrections.
What should you check before applying?
Before submitting the NBI renewal requirements, compare your old clearance with your passport. Check your complete name, birth details, address and civil status.
An address or civil-status change may be written on the old clearance. However, major changes to identity information may require a new application.
